BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 26, 2009 – Hosts
Puerto Rico recorded an emotional five-set
victory against Cuba 21-25, 25-23, 25-17,
20-25, 21-19 to reach the finals of the NORCECA
Women’s Continental Championship against
Dominican Republic.
Aurea Cruz carried the load of the Puerto Rican
attack with 26 points and Sarai Alvarez added
19. Cuban Nancy Carrillo totaled 21 points,
Yanelis Santos and Kenia Carcaces each totaled
17 and Wilma Salas chipped in 10.
“It is a lot of joy for us to be in our first
final,” said Vilmarie Mojiga of Puerto Rico.
“This is one of the most refreshing victories
for us. Now we will look for a win against
Dominican Republic.”
“The emotion is so big,” said Aury Cruz of
Puerto Rico. “We focused in our game and the
things we didn’t do in the past matches.”
“Both teams had the chance to win. We were not
lucky enough and they won,” said Luis Oviedo,
the coach of Cuba.
